A beautiful Italian psychologist, aged just 26, has died after being buried beneath snow for an hour in a devastating avalanche before she was rescued and rushed to hospital, where she later passed away.

The tragedy unfolded in Val Ridanna, in South Tyrol, northern Italy, on 21st March, when a powerful avalanche swept through a group of around 25 ski mountaineers on a steep mountainside.

The young woman, named as Laura Santino, had been on the trip with her husband, who was not caught in the snow and escaped physically unharmed, but was later treated for shock following the incident.

She was among those most seriously injured after being completely buried by the avalanche. Rescuers managed to locate her using avalanche transceivers and probes before airlifting her to a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, where doctors fought to save her life.

Despite their efforts, Laura died from her injuries hours later.

The avalanche, which stretched roughly 150 metres (492 feet) across and ran for several hundred metres down the slope, struck shortly before midday, triggering a major rescue operation involving helicopters, alpine rescue teams, sniffer dogs and dozens of emergency workers.

Two other men, Alexander Froetscher, 57, and Martin Parigger, 62, were killed at the scene, bringing the death toll to three, while several others were injured, including two people who remain in serious condition.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the avalanche, with early indications suggesting unstable layers of snow may have given way under the weight of the skiers.
