A cannibal killer who cut off his victim's penis before eating it with potatoes and Brussels sprouts is hoping for an early release from prison so he can live a quiet life and write a book.
Armin Meiwes, dubbed 'The Cannibal of Rotenburg', is currently serving a life sentence for murdering 43-year-old Bernd Jurgen Brandes in Rotenburg an der Fulda, Germany, in March 2001.
Meiwes had met Bernd through an online cannibalism forum where, according to him, the victim agreed to be "eaten alive".
The victim wanted the cannibal to cut off his penis and eat his genitals while he was still alive, swallowing 20 sleeping pills to withstand the pain.
The following morning, Meiwes then killed his victim by stabbing him in the heart, dismembering his body and freezing parts of it to be eaten later.
During his trial in 2006, Meiwes admitted that he had eaten a number of his victim's body parts.
Meiwes was sentenced for life, but he has been pleading with the Regional Court in Kassel for an early release, local media reported on 11th August.
The application was made after his lawyer revealed how he was singing in the prison choir, regularly attended church, and was now an environmental activist.
Attorney Frank Fuglein described his client as intelligent and a pleasant conversationalist.
He said: "We talk about everything under the sun and the world, or the future. 'I'm fine,' he always says. I don't consider Mr Meiwes dangerous."
On the contrary, Fuglein says he believes his client is peaceful and would continue to be if freed.
He said: "He want to live a quiet life. Mr Meiwes wants to stay in Germany. He'd like to write a book."
He said Meiwes works in the prison laundry in a supervisory role, where he has almost fully repaid his legal costs and that there was apparently someone outside who said they would provide him with a home if he were released.
The cannibal's own home, where the killing took place, was destroyed by fire in 2023, allegedly started by teenagers.
The hearing lasted several hours behind closed doors and no decision has yet been made.
Prosecutors in Frankfurt have opposed his release, citing the expert opinion and stating they still consider him dangerous.
