This is the moment a wild puma squares up to a pair of furiously barking household dogs in a back garden.

The footage shows the incident in the city of Guarapuava, in the Brazilian state of Parana, on 30th May.

The video shows the big cat holding its ground as the two dogs bark relentlessly, with a thin wire fence separating them that is barely visible in the recording.

The puma (Puma concolor) is listed as a species of Least Concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, though hunting, pursuing or killing it is a crime under Brazil's Environmental Crimes Law.

The encounter happened behind a home in the Alto Cascavel neighbourhood, where the Military Environmental Police were called by alarmed residents.

The Military Environmental Police said: "On arriving at the scene, the teams found that the animal had already come down from the tree where it was initially observed and, after being cornered by two dogs, moved off to a nearby wooded area."

Officers were joined by the 16th Military Police Battalion, the fire service, the Instituto Agua e Terra (IAT) and a vet from the Centre for Screening and Rehabilitation of Wild Animals (CETRAS), who found tracks but lost the trail in thick vegetation.

Mauro Britto, a biologist with the IAT, urged anyone who comes across a large cat to keep their distance, contact the institute and make noise to drive the animal away.

Residents have been warned to contact the authorities immediately if the puma is seen again so it can be dealt with safely.
