This is the moment a boy barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel and struggling to reach the pedals was filmed driving a public transport bus as shocked passengers looked on.

The incident happened in Gomez Palacio in Durango state, Mexico, and came to light on 9th August after the footage emerged on social media.

The short clip shows the youngster, thought to be around 12 or 13 years old, perched in the driver’s seat of a bus on the Cereso route.

He stretches over the dashboard to see the road ahead while reaching down to the pedals to keep the vehicle moving.

According to the Durango Department of Mobility and Transportation, the child is the son of the regular driver of unit 045.

Officials said the man admitted leaving his son "in charge" of the vehicle for a few moments while he was present.

Rafael Valentín Aragon, Undersecretary of the Regional Mobility and Transportation Department, described the decision as "irresponsible" and said it could not be ignored.

The driver has been cited for violating the Transportation Law and the bus has been removed from service and impounded.

Authorities confirmed that no incidents occurred during the brief drive but warned that minors operating public transport vehicles is both illegal and dangerous.

The driver has also been sanctioned under state regulations and the incident has reignited debate about safety standards in public transport across Gomez Palacio.
