This is the moment an Opel driver fleeing a police checkpoint crashes through a shop window in a high-speed smash that leaves him and two passengers injured.
The crash happened in Wettingen, in the canton of Aargau, in Switzerland, after the man sped away from a police control point in nearby Wuerenlos shortly after 1am on Monday, 13th October.
According to police, a white Opel approached a traffic checkpoint set up by the Aargau Cantonal Police at the Wuerenlos motorway rest area but suddenly accelerated away, driving over the divider and back onto the A1 in the direction of Bern.
Officers immediately gave chase.
The car left the motorway at the Wettingen-Ost exit and continued at high speed towards the town centre, where another patrol positioned itself at the Zentrumsplatz roundabout.
Moments later, the vehicle came from the opposite lane at high speed, lost control on the roundabout, and smashed through the glass window of a grocery shop, coming to a halt inside.
The driver, a 22-year-old Austrian national, and his 26-year-old Austrian passenger suffered moderate injuries, while a 65-year-old Serbian woman travelling with them sustained light to moderate injuries.
All three were taken to hospital by ambulance.
The shop was left completely wrecked and the car was a write-off.
Firefighters were called in due to a burst water pipe caused by the collision, and local bus services were temporarily diverted.
Police confiscated the driver’s licence at the scene.
The motive for the man’s attempt to flee remains unclear, and an investigation is ongoing, authorities said.
