NOWHERE TO RUN – Horrific Moment People Flee Deadly Wall Of Water That Wipes Out Village
This is the moment a tidal wave of water and debris sweeps down a mountainside and washes away an entire village in seconds.
The disaster struck in the Uttarkashi district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand at around 1:45pm on Tuesday, 5th August.
Video footage posted online shows a powerful surge of muddy water racing through Dharali village as buildings are torn apart and people are heard screaming in panic while trying to flee.
The cloudburst in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river triggered sudden flash floods and a mudslide that caught residents by surprise and overwhelmed the settlement.
Officials confirmed at least four people were killed and more than 50 are feared missing.
Police said up to a dozen people may be buried under the debris and around 25 hotels and homestays were believed to have been swept away.
The Indian Army deployed 150 personnel to assist with rescue efforts and said troops had already pulled 15 survivors from the rubble.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police are also involved in ongoing operations.
Uttarkashi police have urged the public to stay away from rivers and to move children and livestock to safer areas as rainfall continues to threaten the region.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Uttarakhand warning of extremely heavy rainfall, and authorities say all road access to the nearby Gangotri Dham pilgrimage site has been cut off.
