A Polish MP refused to accept a speeding ticket after being stopped for driving at 200 kph, claiming parliamentary immunity to avoid the fine.

The incident took place on the S3 expressway near Polkowice in Lower Silesia, Poland, on 13th October.

Police said they stopped a Hyundai travelling at 200 kph (124 mph) in a 120 zone (75 mph) at around 10:40 am.

Officers issued an on-the-spot fine of PLN 2,500 (GBP 510) and 15 penalty points, but the driver refused to accept it, saying he was protected by parliamentary immunity.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers stopped the car driving at 200 kilometres per hour in an area with a 120 kilometres per hour limit… [The driver] refused to accept a speeding ticket, saying that he is secured by his parliamentary immunity.”

Polish media said that the driver was Lukasz Mejza, a member of the opposition conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Karolina Galecka, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior and Administration, confirmed Mejza’s identity and said the officers “stopped the MP for a check, obviously not knowing it was him.”

Mejza later told the Polish state news agency PAP: “I behaved inappropriately and nothing justifies my conduct. I will pay the fine immediately if possible or waive my immunity if not.”

He explained that he had refused the ticket because he was “in a rush to get to the airport” and “the time needed to issue it would definitely make me late for the flight.”

He added: “In the end, I was late anyway."

He also said: "I will, of course, immediately waive my immunity and will face full responsibility because I’m a man of character… I am sorry again.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference: “If someone hides behind his parliamentary immunity, it’s just utterly foolish.”

He said that despite serving as an MP for many years, “it never even crossed my mind to pull out my parliamentary identity card when stopped by police.”

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski wrote that the incident would not be “let go” and that Mejza would answer for his “barbaric rally.”

Interior Ministry spokesperson Galecka said authorities would submit a request to Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia to strip Mejza of his immunity so charges could be brought against him.

She added: “The law applies to all of us."

Holownia said parliamentary immunity should protect against “political danger,” not against the “stupidity” of driving at 200 kph.

A Law and Justice party spokesperson said its ethics committee would review Mejza’s actions.

Mejza made headlines in 2021 when his former company, Vinci NeoClinic, was accused of targeting families of children with terminal illnesses by offering unproven “miracle” therapies at a cost of USD 80,000 (GBP 59,584).

And in 2024, he was charged with 11 crimes by prosecutors for providing false information to the Polish parliament and concealing assets, with authorities filing an indictment against him in April this year (2025).
