This is the moment a helicopter hovered at a 14,500-foot mountain peak in a remote region of Kazakhstan during a daring rescue of a climber with a broken leg.
The dramatic operation took place on Ordzhonikidze Peak in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain range, and was announced by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Wednesday, 14th August.
Video released by the ministry shows the aircraft holding position in strong winds and thin air as rescuers reach the injured man, who had suffered an open fracture to his shin while climbing.
He is seen being lifted into a stretcher and carried across snow-covered ground to the waiting helicopter.
The climber’s companions had called for help after the accident.
Rescue teams flew in and began the evacuation despite sub-zero temperatures and the challenges of operating at extreme altitude.
The injured man was transported to a safe location by air for further treatment.
