A glamorous lawyer who fled Brazil and moved into a luxury apartment in Portugal after masterminding the brutal torture and execution of her ride-hailing driver husband has been arrested after being sentenced in absentia to 25 years in prison.
The arrest took place on Tuesday, 26th August, in Moura, Alentejo, where 50-year-old Francismara Vasconcelos Machado was reportedly on the beach with family members.
She had been living legally in Maia, Porto district, for almost three years after leaving Brazil in 2023.
During her time there, she tried to keep a low profile and made a living by selling homemade cakes.
Her conviction was announced earlier this month by the Court of Vacaria, in Rio Grande do Sul, which found her guilty of ordering the kidnapping and murder of her 33-year-old husband, app driver Mateus Pereira de Campos, in September 2019.
According to prosecutors, immediately after the sentence was handed down, Brazilian authorities worked with Portuguese officials, the Spanish Civil Guard and Interpol to locate and capture her.
Campos was reported missing on 28th September 2019 after his car was found burned and abandoned next to a highway.
His wife initially told police they had been robbed, but investigators quickly rejected the account.
Two weeks later, Campos’s body was discovered partially buried in woodland with his hands tied behind his back, signs of torture, and two gunshot wounds.
The man who carried out the killing, identified as Fabiano Vieira dos Santos and known as Gato, was sentenced to 29 years in prison.
Francismara is currently before the Porto Court of Appeal and faces extradition proceedings.
