A playful baby rhino has delighted visitors after being filmed chasing a duck around his enclosure in a heartwarming display of youthful energy.
The scenes were captured at Schmiding Zoo in Krenglbach, in Upper Austria, on 22nd March.
The young bull, named Nuru, is a southern white rhinoceros calf born in late January 2026 to mother Niki, and has quickly become a star attraction at the zoo.
Staff have described him as a “little whirlwind” full of curiosity and energy.
Footage released by the zoo shows Nuru sprinting across the enclosure, hopping excitedly and playfully pursuing an unsuspecting mallard duck that briefly becomes his companion.
At one point, the calf even turns towards the camera, appearing to acknowledge onlookers as he continues his energetic run.
Zoo officials said the behaviour is typical for rhino calves, which are known for their constant movement and curiosity.
They explained that young rhinos often explore their surroundings but regularly return to stay close to their mothers for reassurance.
The video shows Nuru repeatedly glancing back towards Niki while playing, staying within a safe distance as he explores.
Zoo staff said the calf’s behaviour reflects a mix of high spirits and a strong desire to discover his environment, creating what they described as “pure joy of life”.
The adorable footage has also sparked a wave of reactions online, with viewers flooding social media with affectionate comments.
One user wrote: “Nuru, we already love you,” while another joked: “The poor mum, running desperately after him.”
Others added: “Smart baby” and “The poor ducks,” as well as simple messages praising the playful calf.
Facebook users were equally charmed, with one writing: “Wonderful! Thank you for this adorable video.”
Another commented: “So cute,” while a third added: “Pure joy of life from this little guy.”
The clip has drawn comparisons to other viral animal moments, including a baby monkey named Punch in Japan that captured global attention after being rejected by its mother and bonding with a stuffed toy.
That story sparked a surge in demand for the plush toy seen in the footage, with reports of the item selling out in multiple countries.
