This is the moment Mexican federal agents uncover a suspected narco tunnel allegedly used to smuggle drugs into the United States from beneath a house near the border.
The discovery was made in Tijuana, Baja California, in north-western Mexico near the US border with San Diego, California, on Sunday, 31st May.
Video released by the Mexican Attorney General’s Office shows investigators descending into the underground passage through a concealed opening inside a property in the Nueva Tijuana neighbourhood.
Footage then shows officers inspecting the narrow tunnel as cables, ventilation systems and lighting equipment line the walls of the excavation.
Authorities said the underground passage measured around 265 metres (869 feet) in length and reached a depth of approximately 6.3 metres (20.6 feet).
Federal prosecutors said the tunnel appeared to connect directly with a street on the US side of the border in San Diego.
Investigators also discovered what they described as operational infrastructure inside the tunnel, including ventilation, lighting and an electronic sliding mechanism designed to move objects between Mexico and the United States.
The raid was carried out after intelligence operations and a court-approved search of the property, which officials believe was being used as a storage and logistics centre for drug trafficking and weapons smuggling.
During the operation, officers seized live ammunition, small quantities of suspected methamphetamine and marijuana, mobile phones and various documents.
Authorities said the evidence suggested the tunnel may have been used to transport narcotics across the border into the United States.
The Mexican Attorney General’s Office stated that the discovery represented a significant blow to the criminal networks operating smuggling routes between Mexico and the US.
Officials added that the property and all items recovered at the scene had been placed under federal control while investigations continue.
No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
