A boy has smashed a mirrored ceiling and a crystal chandelier worth hundreds of thousands of yuan after being refused a jewel-adorned Labubu doll at the Shanghai home of a Chinese influencer.

The incident happened on 1st August in the home of Xiaohongshu, known in English as RedNote, content creator Brother Tail, who said the boy was visiting with a relative.

Brother Tail said the child saw the limited-edition doll covered in expensive jewellery and demanded to have it.

When told no, the boy picked up a remote control and hurled it at the mirror-glass ceiling.

It shattered a section of the ceiling, sending an Italian crystal chandelier worth about CNY 300,000 (GBP 32,070) crashing to the floor.

The influencer said repairs to both the ceiling and chandelier cost around CNY 400,000 (GBP 42,760).

The boy’s parents, who he said showed no remorse, offered to sell everything they had to pay for the damage but could only give CNY 20,000 (GBP 2,138).

He added they also asked him not to post about the incident as it might “affect the boy’s mood”.

Brother Tail said he refused to stay silent, accusing the family of using kinship as emotional blackmail.

Labubu is a cartoon monster character created in 2015 by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and made famous through designer toy company Pop Mart. Originally sold for around USD 20–40 (GBP 16–31), some rare editions now fetch more than USD 150,000 (GBP 118,000) at auction, with demand sparking fights, scalping and even thefts from stores.
