Passengers on a privately chartered Boeing 777 had their trip cut short after a power bank slipped between the seats, sparking fears it could catch fire and forcing the plane to return to base.
The Asiana Airlines flight was en route from Turkey to South Korea when the device was accidentally dropped shortly after takeoff on Tuesday evening, 29th July.
Cabin crew tried to retrieve it, but it had become wedged in a tight space between the seats.
Power banks are banned from checked luggage due to fire risk, but are allowed in carry-on bags if they remain accessible.
When one gets jammed where it cannot be reached, the danger is so serious that the flight may have to turn back.
Lithium battery fires have caused multiple in-flight emergencies, and some airlines now ban the use or charging of power banks during flights.
As a precaution, the captain decided to return to Istanbul while flying over Kazakhstan. The aircraft landed safely at Istanbul Airport at 11:25pm that night.
The incident comes just months after a fire broke out on a domestic South Korean flight when a power bank exploded, injuring several passengers and prompting renewed calls for tighter rules on battery-powered devices in the cabin.
