An off-duty military police officer shot dead a man who robbed him while he was waiting for a ride-hailing service.
The incident took place in the West Zone of Sao Paulo, Brazil, on 17th August 2025.
Security camera footage shows the robber pulling up on a motorcycle, pointing a gun, and demanding the officer’s belongings.
The video shows him taking a Galaxy S20 phone, a watch, a wallet with documents, and a backpack before riding off.
As the man drives away, the officer appears to walk in the opposite direction, then suddenly turns, pulls out his .40 calibre pistol, and fires repeatedly.
Despite being shot, the 26-year-old suspect, who has not been named, managed to flee the scene.
He was later found at the Rio Pequeno Emergency Care Unit, where he had died of his injuries.
The officer’s weapon was collected for examination.
The case was registered as robbery and death resulting from police intervention at the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP).
Under this classification, the case is formally investigated as a police shooting rather than an ordinary homicide, meaning the DHPP will determine whether the officer acted lawfully. The registration does not prevent him from facing charges if prosecutors decide the force used was excessive.
