A takeaway restaurant has been shut down after it was found to be using condense water from the air conditioning unit to cook noodles and mushrooms.

The incident happened in Lianyungang, in Jiangsu Province, China, and was confirmed in an official report from the local market supervision bureau on 1st August.

Officials said the restaurant, named Jidongjia Braised Rice Pot, held a valid business licence and small restaurant registration certificate but had no dine-in service.

The case was under investigation after a video emerged showing a white pipe from an air conditioner dripping into a bucket, flanked by two other buckets containing soaking food, which officials say was then sold to customers.

In the video, water drips continuously from a pipe extending from a wall into a bucket, with buckets of soaking vermicelli noodles and mushrooms on either side.

The restaurant’s manager told reporters he was dealing with the matter at the market supervision bureau and could not explain when the video was filmed or why the pipe was positioned over the bucket.

Authorities said the restaurant had been issued with a rectification order, its food sealed and sampled, and its products removed from delivery platforms.

The venue has been ordered closed while the investigation continues.

Officials said they will step up food safety supervision across the district and will release the results of the case to the public once completed.
