A male nurse who claimed his nursing technician girlfriend had died during a sex game gone-wrong has been convicted of murder and jailed for 26 years.
The sentencing took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Friday, 22 August. The crime happened in November 2022.
The Jury Court found obstetrics nursing resident Iago Lace Falcao guilty of triple-qualified homicide and concealment of a corpse over the death of 27-year-old Rita de Cassia Matias Nogueira.
According to prosecutors, the crime was driven by jealousy, possession, and the victim’s refusal to acknowledge the relationship, as well as her continued contact with a former fiance.
Falcao strangled Rita, wrapped her body in a blanket, and transported it in his car to an abandoned family-owned property in Bento Ribeiro, where he left it hidden.
The forensic report confirmed she died of asphyxiation. Family members said her arms and legs were bound and her body showed signs of torture and strangulation.
CCTV footage obtained by police reportedly showed Falcao parking outside Rita’s home on the night of 13 November 2022.
It captured her walking over to his car and speaking for 30 seconds before going back inside.
The footage then showed him following her in, and an hour and 15 minutes later both were seen leaving together. They were the last images of her alive.
Rita had been missing for two days before investigators found her body on 15 November 2022 in an empty house belonging to Falcao's mother.
That same day, Falcao arrived with a lawyer at the Homicide Police Station in Barra da Tijuca, where he reportedly confessed to the killing and told officers where he had hidden her body.
Despite this, police released him, saying he had come forward voluntarily and was no longer in flagrante delicto.
Four days later, officers arrested him at his family’s home in Taquara.
Rita worked as a nursing technician at the Emergency Care Unit in Nilopolis and at the Leila Diniz Maternity Hospital in Barra, where she had met Falcao during his residency. They had been in a relationship for just over a month.
Before that, Rita had been in a 10-year relationship with a man named Igor, to whom she was once engaged.
Her aunt Aldenice Nogueira told local media the family believed jealousy led to her murder.
