FLYOVER – Lorry Driver Who 'Took Off' Crushing Car Lied About Brake Failure After Falling Asleep

This is the moment a dashboard camera captures a lorry that seems to launch into the air after the driver fell asleep and ploughed over the car in front, crushing it underneath.

The accident happened on the Washington Luis Highway (SP-310) in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, on Wednesday afternoon, 20th August.

Footage from cameras inside the cabin shows 58-year-old driver Aureliano Antonio Messias with his arms folded and eyes closed as the lorry slowly rolls forward.

Other angles show the moment the lorry slams into the back of the car and mounts it, giving the impression from inside that the truck is taking off when in fact it is crushing the vehicle and the man trapped inside.

The car's driver, lawyer Glaucio Rogerio Goncalves Gouveia, 51, died at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, which was completely destroyed.

The lorry was loaded with sulfuric acid, forcing the highway to be shut for more than five hours while emergency teams secured the area.

Messias told police he suffered a brake failure, but the company that owns the lorry later said it was in perfect condition, with all systems working normally.

The incident has been registered as manslaughter and is being investigated by the Civil Police.

Gouveia's body has been laid out in Mirassol and will be buried on Friday, 22nd August, in Sao Jose do Rio Preto.
