A farm labourer on his first day at work allegedly beat a colleague to death with a piece of wood before eating part of his brain.
The killing happened on 12th August at Fazenda Baixinha, a rural property in Ilheus, in the far south of the Brazilian state of Bahia.
The area is at the heart of Brazil’s cocoa bean country, where farms grow the pods used to make chocolate under the shade of taller trees.
Police said a local landowner had offered suspect Luiz Teixeira de Oliveira work helping bring in the harvest.
But for reasons still unknown, he got into a violent argument with fellow labourer Pedro Nascimento dos Santos, 60, and repeatedly struck him on the head with a piece of wood.
The blows were so severe that brain matter was scattered across the floor.
Witnesses alleged the suspect then picked up some of the fragments and ate them.
Police said they are still verifying the cannibalism claims, as dogs that were on the farm also ate parts of the brain.
The suspect fled into nearby woodland before officers arrived and remains on the run.
Search teams from the Civil and Military Police have been combing surrounding farms since the killing but have yet to find him.
The case has been registered as first-degree murder, and the motive remains under investigation.
